Welcome to Divine Mercy Parish! We are located in Manistee, Michigan, on the eastern shores of Lake Michigan. Since 1862, the presence of a community of Catholics has been part of the history of Manistee. From the first settling of our ancestors in faith, to the present members of Divine Mercy Parish, we continue to embrace the faith traditions of our ancestors - celebrating the Eucharist, educating children and teens in the Faith, and being the presence of Christ to those who are in need.
Approval for Guardian Angels Parish was granted and the cornerstone for the new church was placed in 1888. The church was completed in 1891 and it remains the most unchanged Catholic Church in Manistee in appearance from when it was first constructed.
Permission was granted in 1883 for a new parish to be built in Manistee. St. Joseph Church was built in 1884, destroyed by a windstorm that year, and a new church was built in its present location. The church has undergone many changes over the last 130+ years.
In 1862, St. Mary was the first Catholic Church in Manistee. The church was located on the north side of the Manistee River. In 1874, the second St. Mary Church was built on the corner of Sycamore and Third Streets. It remained there until St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Shrine was built. It was dedicated Our Lady of Mount Carmel Shrine on July 14, 1963 by Bishop Allen Babcock. The final Mass at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Shrine was celebrated on December 8, 2018 by Bishop Steven J. Raica.
